Never doubt that teaching is serious business. That said, one of the best parts of working in a school is laughter. My students make me laugh everyday, and I love them for it. I wish I had collected and bottled all of the hilarious situations over the years and all of the joy. Of course, a great deal of the humor in schools is self-deprecating. One of the first rules of teaching: you will never survive if you take yourself too seriously.

Though several alumni dispute this fact, I believe that 2020 was Gateway’s first year without a senior prank, one of many casualties of sheltering-in-place.
