Together We Can Do So Much

As we grow up, we develop independence and the confidence to navigate the challenges in front of us. However, realizing that we don’t have to go it alone – that we are actually more powerful in combination with others – is an equally important lesson.

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

Helen Keller

It’s easy to mistake self-reliance for maturity or strength. Sure, there are times when we need to carry responsibility for ourselves or those we love squarely on our own shoulders. But more often, when we share the burden, encourage others to contribute, actively seek diverse voices, and work together, we accomplish more and better. As a leader I know this to be true. As an individual, it seems like I have to learn and relearn this lesson again and again.

A note about this photo: I took this picture in 2011 as my advisory group was leaving school for a full day of community service – a perfect example of how much we can accomplish together. I love how joyful Raymond and Ramon are and how comfortable they are with each other. The students in my advisory group constantly remind me how important my work is, and they also remind me to laugh. They remind me of the beauty and potential of each unique individual, and they also remind me of the importance of connection and community. What a gift.
